Raksha Bandhan 2026: is it the 27th or the 28th?
Raksha Bandhan 2026 is on Friday, 28 August.
The confusion is real and it has a real cause: Purnima tithi actually begins on the 27th. But the whole of that day's usable hours fall inside Bhadra, and the tithi is only present at sunrise on the 28th. Both rules point at Friday.
The window for tying the rakhi is short — from sunrise, around 5:55 AM in Sagar, until 9:48 AM. Just under four hours.
The timings
| Purnima tithi begins | 9:08 AM · Thursday 27 August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Purnima tithi ends | 9:48 AM · Friday 28 August 2026 |
| Bhadra (avoided) | 9:08 AM – 9:34 PM · Thursday 27 August |
| Rakhi tying muhurat | About 5:55 AM – 9:48 AM · Friday 28 August |
Times are IST. Sunrise is calculated for Sagar (23.84°N, 78.74°E) and varies by a minute or two across the district. Tithi and Bhadra timings follow the standard drik panchang for 2026.
Why not the 27th?
Two rules decide it, and this year they happen to agree.
The sunrise rule
A festival follows the tithi present at sunrise. On the 27th, Purnima does not begin until 9:08 AM — hours after sunrise, so that day does not qualify. On the 28th, Purnima is present at sunrise and holds until 9:48 AM.
Bhadra
Bhadra runs from 9:08 AM to 9:34 PM on the 27th — covering the entire practical daytime window. Auspicious rituals are avoided during Bhadra, which rules out the 27th even for families who would otherwise have used it.
What this means if you are sending a gift in Sagar
A four-hour window on Friday morning changes the deadline. "Before Raksha Bandhan" is not good enough — if the rakhi and the gift are meant to be in hand for the tying, they have to arrive on Thursday evening or very early Friday.
We deliver across Civil Lines, Makronia, Tili, Gopalganj and the Cantt area (470001–470005). If you are outside Sagar — another city, or another country — you can order from wherever you are and we handle the delivery here. Give us the area and the recipient's phone number if you do not have the exact address, and we will call to confirm before setting out.
Quick answers
Can the rakhi be tied after 9:48 AM?
Many families do, and plenty treat the whole day as the festival. The 9:48 AM figure is when Purnima tithi ends — it matters if your family observes the muhurat strictly. If yours does not, Friday delivery any time is fine and we can schedule it.
What is the last moment I can order?
4 PM on Thursday for Thursday-evening delivery in Sagar, or 8 PM Thursday to be scheduled for Friday morning. After that we cannot promise it lands before the muhurat, and we would rather say so than take the order.
I am abroad — can I still send something to Sagar?
Yes. Payment works from outside India, and we call the recipient to confirm the address before delivery. You get a photo once it is handed over.
Do you deliver on Raksha Bandhan itself?
Yes, including early Friday morning so the gift is there before the muhurat closes. Those slots fill first, so order on Thursday.
